PERUNA SAARI. KANAVA

The performance is a part of SASHAPASHA‘s KANAVA project. The narrative has a few layers. Firstly it is about White see baltic see canal built by GULAG inmates in 1933. The canal was built literally by hands, without any modern technologies and almost without using metal and concrete. Everything was made of wood. The first project of canal surfaced in times of Peters the Great. The regular Russian Navy was established by Peter the Great (Peter I) in October 1696 on the coast of the White Sea. The legend says that Peter himself built the first ships with an ax. Stalin embodied the idea of Peter I, but at the cost of hundreds of thousands of humans lives. In a second layer, the idea to make wooden food came from the memories of my grandfather. His family used to live next to the canal after the second world war. It was huge starvation is Russia this period and all the bread contained wooden sawdust. My grandfather and his small brother were fighting to eat the rest of this sawdust from the father’s knife. Pancakes made from potato peel was a delicacy.
